Overview

The Helfrichi Firefish (Nemateleotris helfrichi), also known as Helfrich’s Dartfish, is a small, vibrant saltwater fish prized in the aquarium hobby for its striking coloration and peaceful nature. It features a bright yellow head that fades into a brilliant purple or lavender body, often with a pearly white section near the tail.

Key Characteristics

  • Size: Reaches a maximum length of about 2.5 to 3 inches (6-8 cm).
  • Habitat (Wild): Native to the deeper waters (typically below 40 meters/130 feet) of the Pacific Ocean, where it hovers over sand and rubble patches near reef slopes and darts into nearby caves or rockwork when threatened.
  • Habitat (Aquarium): Requires an aquarium of at least 20 gallons with ample live rock formations, crevices for hiding, and a secure, tight-fitting lid to prevent jumping. It thrives in peaceful community tanks.
  • Diet: A carnivore that feeds on zooplankton and small crustaceans in the wild. In captivity, it accepts a varied diet of finely chopped meaty foods like mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, and high-quality pellets or flakes.
  • Temperament: Peaceful and shy, making it an ideal companion for other non-aggressive fish species in a reef-safe environment. It is best kept singly or as a confirmed mated pair, as it can be territorial toward other members of its own species.

Aquarium Care

The Helfrichi Firefish is considered to have a moderate or intermediate care level, primarily due to its shy nature and deepwater origins. It prefers moderate lighting and stable water conditions with temperatures around 72-78°F (22-26°C), pH of 8.1-8.4, and specific gravity of 1.020-1.025.
This fish is a beautiful and elegant addition to a well-maintained reef aquarium, provided it is housed with suitable, non-aggressive tankmates and has plenty of hiding spaces to feel secure.
