Description

Overview

The male golden rhomboidalis wrasse (Cirrhilabrus rhomboidalis) features a vibrant golden-yellow body and a pale to dark blue head with distinct dark blue, maze-like stripes. A key identifying feature is its elegant, diamond-shaped tail.

Key Characteristics

Feature  Description
Coloration The body is predominantly golden-yellow, with the head displaying purple and blue hues. Males exhibit more intense, defined colors, especially during courtship.
Markings Numerous dark blue, thin lines create a maze-like pattern across the body.
Fins The fins are often translucent with soft yellow, purple, and pink hues. Males possess longer, more elongated pelvic and dorsal fins compared to the females’ shorter, stubbier fins.
Size Males tend to be larger, reaching a maximum size of up to 4 inches, while females are generally smaller.
Tail The caudal (tail) fin is a distinctive diamond shape, which is less pronounced in females.
Like many fairy wrasses, these fish are protogynous hermaphrodites, meaning all juveniles start as females and the dominant female in a group can transition into a male if necessary. Males will also intensify their colors and perform a “flashing” courtship display to attract females
