Australian Stripey
The Australian Stripey (Microcanthus strigatus), also known as the footballer or convict fish, is a small, vibrant marine fish famous for its bold yellow and black slanting stripes. While often mistaken for a butterflyfish, it is actually a member of the sea chub family (Kyphosidae).
Key Characteristics
Appearance: It features a deep, compressed body with striking diagonal black stripes over a yellow-to-silver background. It typically grows up to 6 inches (16 cm) in length.
Habitat: Native to the Pacific Ocean, they are commonly found along the east and west coasts of Australia, as well as Japan, Hawaii, and China. They inhabit rocky reefs, estuaries, and even tide pools.
Behavior: These are peaceful, active, and curious schooling fish. They are known for investigating divers and snorkelers.
Aquarium Role: They are highly prized by hobbyists for their ability to eat Aiptasia (pest anemones). They are generally “reef safe with caution,” as they may occasionally nip at large-polyp stony (LPS) corals.
Care in Captivity
Tank Size: A minimum of 55–120 gallons is recommended to accommodate their active swimming and schooling nature.
Diet: They are omnivores and require a varied diet of algae, mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and high-quality flakes or pellets.
Environment: They thrive in tanks with plenty of rockwork, caves, and open swimming space.
