Description

Overview

The blacktail lemonpeel angelfish (Centropyge flavissima x C. vrolicki) is a hybrid dwarf angelfish resulting from a cross between a Lemonpeel Angelfish and a Halfblack Angelfish. It is known for its striking coloration, blending the vibrant yellow of one parent with the dark features of the other.

Physical Characteristics

  • Coloration: The body is primarily a bright, vibrant yellow. It is distinguished by having a black tail (caudal fin) and often a black rear section of the body. Blue accents are typically present, including a blue edge on the cheek spine, a potential blue ring around the eye, and blue markings on the edges of the dorsal and anal fins.
  • Size: This species typically reaches a maximum size of 4 to 5.5 inches (10 to 14 cm) in length.
  • Juvenile Markings: Juvenile individuals may display a blue-rimmed black spot on each side of their body, which changes as they mature.

Overview and Care

  • Habitat: As a hybrid, it is not found in the wild but is selectively bred in captivity. Its parent species originate from the Indo-Pacific region.
  • Temperament: It is generally considered semi-aggressive, especially towards other angelfish species or very docile tankmates. It is best kept one to a tank.
  • Diet: It is an omnivore and a good browser of various algaes. A balanced diet should include spirulina, marine algae, high-quality pellets, and frozen foods like mysis and brine shrimp.
  • Reef Compatibility: It is considered reef-safe with caution. Like other angelfish, individuals may occasionally nip at large-polyped stony (LPS) corals and clam mantles.
  • Tank Requirements: A minimum aquarium size of 30-70 gallons is recommended for a single specimen. It requires ample live rock structures and caves for hiding and foraging.
