Description

Overview

The Cream Angelfish (Apolemichthys xanthurus), also known as the Indian Yellowtail Angelfish, is a marine fish native to the Indian Ocean. It is a popular, albeit semi-aggressive, choice for experienced aquarists due to its distinctive coloration and manageable care requirements.

Physical Appearance

  • Body Color: The main body color ranges from a soft cream to light yellow, often developing a latticed network of dark lines on the scales as it matures, which creates a subtle pattern. The body can also darken with age.
  • Tail: A striking feature is its bright, solid yellow caudal (tail) fin.
  • Other Fins: The dorsal and anal fins are black with a prominent white or silvery-white margin along the edge.
  • Head: The face has a thick, opaque black stripe that runs across the eye, with yellow highlights sometimes present near the eyes.
  • Size: Adults can attain a maximum total length of 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 centimeters).
  • Juveniles: Younger fish often exhibit more distinct alternating yellow and cream-colored bands, which fade as they reach maturity.

Habitat and Care

  • Habitat: In the wild, they inhabit coral reefs, rocky outcrops, and lagoons in the Indo-Pacific region, seeking refuge in crevices and caves.
  • Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 100-125 gallons is recommended to provide ample swimming room and hiding places among live rock.
  • Temperament: While generally considered semi-aggressive and hardy, they can be territorial, especially towards other angelfish species. Only one specimen should typically be kept per tank.
  • Reef Compatibility: They are considered “reef safe with caution” because they are prone to nipping at stony and soft corals, as well as clam mantles.
  • Diet: They are omnivores. In captivity, they require a varied diet including Spirulina, marine algae, high-quality angelfish preparations, mysis shrimp, and other meaty items.
  • Water Conditions: They thrive in stable marine aquarium conditions: temperature 72-78° F, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity 1.020-1.025 sg.
