Overview

The Asfur Angelfish (scientific name: Pomacanthus asfur), also known as the Arabian Angelfish or Crescent Angelfish, is a large, vibrant marine fish native to the Red Sea and Western Indian Ocean.

Physical Appearance

  • Adults: The adult body is predominantly dark blue or purplish, featuring a prominent, vertical yellow marking in the shape of a crescent or broad band along its middle. It has a black face and a solid, bright yellow caudal (tail) fin. The dorsal and anal fins are dark and end in filaments.
  • Juveniles: Juveniles look distinctly different from adults, displaying a blue-black body marked with a series of narrow white and pale-blue vertical bars.
  • Size: This species can grow up to 40 cm (about 16 inches) in total length.

Habitat and Behavior

  • Natural Habitat: In the wild, they are typically found in shallow, protected shoreline reefs near caves and crevices, usually at depths of 3 to 15 meters.
  • Temperament: They are generally considered semi-aggressive but can be somewhat shy in an aquarium setting. They are highly territorial towards other angelfish, especially other Asfurs, and are best kept as the only angelfish specimen in a tank.
  • Reef Compatibility: They are generally not considered fully “reef safe” as they are prone to nipping at stony and soft corals, clam mantles, and other sessile invertebrates. They may be kept with caution in a very large tank with specific types of less palatable corals.

Diet

The Asfur Angelfish is an omnivore, primarily feeding on sponges and tunicates in its natural environment. In captivity, a varied diet is required, including:
  • High-quality angelfish preparations that contain spongiform products.
  • Meaty foods such as krill, shrimp, squid, and clam.
  • Vegetable matter like spirulina or seaweed (nori).

Aquarium Care

  • Tank Size: A minimum aquarium size of 150 to 200 gallons is recommended for an adult due to its size and need for swimming space.
  • Environment: The tank should have ample live rock aquascaped to provide numerous hiding places and “bolt holes,” along with open areas for swimming.
  • Care Level: Considered to have a moderate or easy care level.
