Harlequin Tusk (Indo)

Also known as Indo-Pacific Harlequin Tusk, Harlequin Tuskfish

The Indo-Pacific Harlequin Tusk features the same stunning orange-red and white banding pattern with blue teeth and facial markings as the Australian variant, but specimens from the Indo-Pacific region are typically smaller, less intensely colored, and more sensitive than Australian Tusks. While still beautiful and personable, Indo specimens require more careful acclimation and are generally considered less hardy. They represent a more affordable alternative to premium Australian specimens.

Key Features

  • Scientific Name: Choerodon fasciatus
  • Common Names: Indo-Pacific Harlequin Tusk, Indo Tusk, Harlequin Tuskfish
  • Adult Size: Up to 8-10 inches (smaller than Australian variants)
  • Lifespan: 10-15 years with proper care
  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive; territorial
  • Reef Compatibility: Not reef safe; will consume invertebrates
  • Minimum Tank Size: 125 gallons preferred
  • Experience Level: Intermediate to Advanced; more sensitive than Australian variant

Habitat & Tank Requirements

Tank Environment: Requires large tank with substantial open swimming space and extensive rockwork with caves. Provide a deep sand bed (2-3 inches) for burying behavior. Strong water flow was appreciated. Secure rockwork firmly.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 72-78°F (22-26°C)
  • Salinity: 1.020-1.025
  • pH: 8.1-8.4
  • Excellent, stable water quality essential (more sensitive than Aussie variant)

Equipment Recommendations:

  • High-capacity filtration system
  • Quality protein skimmer
  • Strong water circulation
  • Secure, tight-fitting lid (excellent jumper)
  • Sand substrate

Indo specimens require more careful attention to water stability.

Diet & Feeding

Indo-Pacific Harlequin Tusks are carnivores requiring hard-shelled foods.

Recommended foods include:

  • Primary: Frozen krill, frozen mysis shrimp, frozen squid, chopped clams
  • Hard-shelled foods: Snails, small crabs, shrimp with shells, mussels (ESSENTIAL)
  • Variety: Chopped scallops, chopped fish, marine flesh
  • Supplements: Vitamin-enriched foods regularly

Feeding Frequency: Once or twice daily

Special Note: MUST have regular hard-shelled foods for tooth maintenance. May be pickier eaters initially compared to Australian specimens. Patience required during acclimation period.

Social Structure & Compatibility

  • Tankmates: Best with other large, semi-aggressive fish
  • Territorial: Can be aggressive toward other wrasses
  • Predatory: Will eat small fish and all invertebrates
  • Reef Safety: Will consume crustaceans and may rearrange rockwork

Notes & Considerations

  • Beautiful orange-red and white banding with blue teeth and facial markings.
  • Generally less vibrant coloration than Australian specimens.
  • Blue coloration on teeth and face is typically less intense than the Aussie variant.
  • More sensitive and less hardy than Australian specimens.
  • Requires a more careful acclimation process.
  • More susceptible to stress-related issues during shipping and introduction.
  • Higher mortality rate during first months compared to Australian Tusks.
  • More affordable option for those on budget.
  • Still very personable and intelligent once established.

  • May bury in sand when stressed or sleeping.
  • Provide adequate sand depth for natural behavior.
  • Native to the broader Indo-Pacific region.
  • More readily available than Australian specimens.
  • Good option for those accepting slightly less intense coloration and hardiness.
  • Still requires a large system and proper care.
  • Can live 10-15 years with proper conditions.

Why Choose a Quarantined Harlequin Tusk (Indo)?

Purchasing a quarantined Indo-Pacific specimen from us means you’re starting with a healthier, better-acclimated fish. Indo specimens are inherently more sensitive than Australian variants, making proper quarantine absolutely critical. All fish are carefully observed, treated as needed, and trained to accept varied foods including hard-shelled items before sale. Our quarantine process allows Indo Tusks to recover from shipping stress and fully acclimate, significantly improving survival rates. While less expensive than Australian specimens, proper quarantine is essential for success. Secure lid mandatory to prevent jumping.
