Overview

The Katherine’s Fairy Wrasse (Cirrhilabrus katherinae) is a vibrant and peaceful marine fish from the Western Pacific known for its striking coloration and suitability for reef aquariums. It is relatively rare in the aquarium trade.

Key Characteristics

  • Scientific Name: Cirrhilabrus katherinae
  • Size: Grows up to a maximum of 4 inches (around 9-10 cm).
  • Coloration: Males are generally more colorful, featuring a pinkish-red body, bright blue-green markings on the head, and a yellow tail. Females are less colorful, typically reddish-brown with a black spot on the caudal peduncle (base of the tail).
  • Habitat: In the wild, it inhabits exposed outer reefs and drop-offs in the Indo-West Pacific, specifically around the Philippines, Palau, Guam, and Southern Japan, at depths of 30 to 130 feet (10-40 m).
  • Temperament: A peaceful and active species, making it an excellent community fish.
  • Diet: Primarily a carnivore, feeding on zooplankton in its natural environment. In an aquarium, it thrives on a varied diet of small meaty foods.

Aquarium Care

  • Care Level: Considered moderate to easy for experienced aquarists.
  • Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 50-55 gallons is recommended to provide ample swimming space and live rock for hiding spots.
  • Reef Safe: Yes, it is compatible with corals and most invertebrates.
  • Water Conditions: Requires stable marine water parameters, including a temperature range of 74-82°F (23-27°C).
  • Special Notes:
    • Like other fairy wrasses, it is known to be a jumper, so a tight-fitting aquarium lid is essential.
    • It forms a protective mucus cocoon to sleep within the rockwork at night, rather than burying itself in the sand.
    • All wrasses are hermaphrodites; females can transition to males if a dominant male is absent.
