Description
The Talbot’s damselfish (Chrysiptera talboti) is a vibrant, small marine fish known for its distinctive two-tone coloration: a canary yellow head and a bright blue or lavender body. A popular choice for aquarists due to its hardiness, it is an omnivorous and active species that can become semi-aggressive and territorial as it matures.

Overview and Habitat

  • Scientific Name: Chrysiptera talboti
  • Common Names: Talbot’s Demoiselle, Sunface Damsel, Peach Damsel
  • Native Range: Found in the Indo-Pacific region, from the Andaman Sea to Fiji, inhabiting coral-rich areas of seaward reef slopes and lagoons at depths of 3 to 35 meters (approx. 10 to 115 feet).
  • Size: Typically grows to about 2 to 2.5 inches (5-6 cm) in length, with dominant males potentially reaching up to 6 cm.
  • Coloration: Juveniles are often more vibrant blue, while adults have a pale blue or purple body with a contrasting yellow head and a small black spot near the dorsal fin.

Behavior and Diet

  • Temperament: While generally considered peaceful as a juvenile, the Talbot’s damselfish becomes more territorial and semi-aggressive as it ages, a common trait among damselfish. It is particularly territorial towards its own species or other similarly sized, aggressive fish.
  • Social Behavior: In the wild, they are typically found alone or in social groups. In captivity, if housing more than one, a large tank with ample hiding spots is necessary to mitigate aggression.
  • Diet: This species is an omnivore. In nature, it primarily feeds on zooplankton and algae. In an aquarium, a varied diet should include high-quality marine flakes and pellets, as well as frozen or live meaty foods like Mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and chopped seafood.

Aquarium Care

The Talbot’s damselfish is known for being very hardy and is an ideal choice for beginner aquarists.
  • Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 20-30 gallons is recommended for a single fish or a pair.
  • Reef Safe: Yes, it is generally considered reef safe and will not harm corals or invertebrates.
  • Water Conditions: Requires stable water parameters, including a temperature of 72-78°F (23-26°C), pH of 8.1-8.4, and a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025.
  • Aquascaping: A well-structured aquascape with plenty of live rock, caves, and crevices provides necessary hiding spots and helps establish territories, which is crucial for managing their territorial nature.
  • Compatibility: Best kept with other semi-aggressive species that can hold their own, such as the Six-Line Wrasse or certain blennies. Avoid housing with more docile fish that may be easily intimidated.
