Habitat and Behavior

In its natural environment, the Red Stop Light Cardinalfish thrives in shallow coral reefs, often hiding among coral heads or long-spined sea urchins during the day. It is a nocturnal hunter, becoming more active in the evening and throughout the night to feed on small crustaceans and other meaty foods.
This species is a slow, methodical swimmer that generally coexists well with other small, peaceful tank mates. When kept in groups, they establish a hierarchy without significant aggression, provided they have enough hiding spaces. They are also mouthbrooders, with the male carrying the eggs in his mouth until they hatch.

Aquarium Care

The Red Stop Light Cardinalfish is considered an easy-care fish suitable for beginner and experienced hobbyists.
  • Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 30 gallons is recommended to provide ample space and rockwork with caves for hiding.
  • Diet: In captivity, they readily accept a varied diet of high-quality marine flakes and pellets, supplemented with frozen or live foods like Mysis and brine shrimp.
  • Water Conditions: Stable water parameters are crucial, with a recommended temperature range of 72–78°F, pH of 8.1-8.4, and salinity of 1.020-1.025.
