Description
Overview
The Black-backed Wrasse (Anampses neoguinaicus) is a colorful marine fish from the Indo-Pacific that is commonly found on coral reefs and is known for its distinct coloration, especially in juveniles and females. It is a popular, though expert-only, species in the aquarium trade.Â
Physical Description and Identification
The appearance of the Black-backed Wrasse varies significantly between sexes and as they mature, a process known as sexual dimorphism.Â
- Females and Juveniles: Feature a pearl-white stomach and midsection with a solid black upper half (head and back). This black area is covered in small, vibrant blue spots. They also have a blue-edged black spot on their gill cover and another at the rear of the dorsal fin.
- Males: Large adult males typically have less pronounced black on their backs, often displaying maroon and blue designs above their eyes and on their fins. They can grow up to 9 inches (23 cm) in length.Â
Habitat and Diet
This species is found in the tropical Indo-Pacific, including areas like Fiji, Australia, and Indonesia. They inhabit coral reefs, lagoons, and rocky environments, seeking out places to hide. They can often be seen swimming near the bottom over rubble and sand, searching for food.Â
Their natural diet consists mainly of benthic invertebrates such as small crustaceans, sea urchins, and mollusks. They may sometimes form groups with other small wrasses or follow goatfish to assist in hunting.Â
Aquarium Care
Due to their specific needs, the Black-backed Wrasse is best suited for expert aquarists.Â
- Tank Requirements: They require a large tank, at least 100-120 gallons, with ample live rock for shelter and foraging. A deep sandbed (minimum 2 inches) is necessary as they burrow at night or when stressed. A secure lid is also needed to prevent them from jumping out.
- Diet in Captivity: They need to be fed a varied, meaty diet multiple times daily, including high-quality marine foods like flakes, pellets, and vitamin-enriched frozen mysis shrimp.
- Compatibility: While generally peaceful with other fish, they can become semi-aggressive towards other Black-backed Wrasses as adults, and it is usually recommended to keep only one per tank. Keep in mind they may prey on small crustaceans and ornamental shrimp.
Approximate Purchase Size: Male Small: 1-1/2″ to 2-1/2″; Small/Medium: 2-1/2″ to 3-1/2″; Medium: 3-1/2″ to 4-1/2″; Medium/Large: 4-1/2″ to 5-1/2″; Large: 5-1/4″ to 6-1/4″
