Description

Overview

The Cortez Angelfish (Pomacanthus zonipectus) is a large, semi-aggressive marine fish known for its striking color transformation from its juvenile to adult stage. It is found in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, particularly among the reefs in the Sea of Cortez.

Key Characteristics

  • Size: Adults can reach a maximum length of up to 18 inches (46 cm).
  • Lifespan: With proper care in an aquarium, they can live for ten years or more.
  • Temperament: They are generally considered semi-aggressive and can be territorial as they mature, typically recommended as the only angelfish in a tank.
  • Reef Compatibility: They are not considered reef-safe as they naturally feed on sponges, clams, and corals (sessile invertebrates).
  • Habitat: They thrive in large seaward reefs and require a minimum aquarium size of 250 gallons to accommodate their mature size and need for swimming space.

Appearance

The appearance of the Cortez Angelfish changes significantly as it matures:
  • Juveniles: They have a black or brownish-black body with vibrant, vertical yellow and blue stripes or semi-circular markings that radiate from the tail area. Their dorsal and pelvic fins have bright blue edges.
  • Adults: The adult coloration transitions to a predominantly blue or green-blue body with a pale, speckled mid-section. A solid vertical yellow stripe is present just behind the gills, and often another yellow swipe is behind the eye. The posterior half of the body may have a matrix of crisscrossing lines.

Diet

In their natural habitat, they are omnivores, feeding on a variety of items including sponges, algae, crustaceans, clams, and coral polyps. In captivity, a well-balanced diet should include:
  • High-quality angelfish preparations containing sponges.
  • Spirulina and marine algae (vegetable matter).
  • Meaty foods such as mysis shrimp and other frozen items
