Description

Overview

The dispar anthias is a small, vibrant, and active reef-safe fish from the Indo-Pacific region, often kept in saltwater aquariums. They thrive in groups, especially in a “harem” structure with one male and multiple females, and require a spacious tank with plenty of open swimming room and rockwork for hiding. Due to their plankton diet, they need to be fed multiple times a day with a varied diet of enriched meaty foods like mysis shrimp and pellets.

Habitat and Tank Requirements

    • Tank Size:

A minimum of a 125-gallon tank is recommended for a harem setup, with smaller groups doing well in a 75-90 gallon tank.

    • Aquascaping:

Create a diverse environment with live rock for hiding places and slopes, caves, and overhangs.

    • Water Parameters:

      Maintain water temperatures between

      72−78 F, a pH of 8.1−8.4, and a salinity of 1.020−1.025
  • Lighting:

Some hobbyists suggest indirect lighting can be beneficial.

    Diet and Feeding

    Planktivores:

Dispar anthias are plankton feeders and need to be fed multiple times a day to thrive, as they can become thin easily.

    Food:

Offer a varied diet of small meaty foods such as enriched brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, high-quality pellets, and other frozen and finely chopped offerings.

    Observation:

Monitor their bellies to ensure they are eating and staying healthy, as some may be picky eaters.

Social Behavior and Compatibility

  • Grouping:

Dispar anthias do best in groups or harems. A common recommendation is to keep one male with several females.

    Males:

In a group, one of the females may eventually change sex to become a male. Keeping multiple males together will lead to fighting.

    Tank Mates:
They are considered reef safe and generally peaceful with other community fish like clownfish, tangs, and gobies. However, they can be aggressive towards each other, especially if not housed correctly.
