Midas Blenny

Key Characteristics

• Size: They typically grow up to 5-6 inches (13-15 cm) in length.
• Coloration: The normal coloration is a golden-orange or yellow, but they can dramatically change color to brown or darker shades when stressed, frightened, or to mimic other fish. They always have distinctive bright blue eyes.
• Temperament: Generally peaceful, but can be territorial towards other blennies or similarly shaped fish (like dartfish and gobies) in smaller aquariums. A larger tank generally reduces aggressive behavior.
• Habitat: Native to the Indo-Pacific region, they are found in coral reefs with moderate currents and plenty of hiding spots.
• Diet: They are omnivores, but unlike many other blennies that primarily graze on algae, Midas Blennies are primarily planktivores, feeding on zooplankton in the water column. A varied diet of meaty and vegetable matter is recommended in captivity.
• Aquarium Care:
  • Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 30 gallons is recommended, with a larger tank being preferable.
  • Tank Environment: They require an aquarium with ample live rock for perching, hiding, and exploring. They lack a swim bladder and often rest on rocks or ledges.
  • Lid Requirement: A tight-fitting lid is mandatory, as they are known to be enthusiastic jumpers, especially when startled.
  • Reef Safe: Yes, they are safe for coral and invertebrate aquariums.
