Overview

The Bluefin Angelfish (Centropyge multispinis) is a hardy and active dwarf angelfish found throughout the Indo-Pacific, known for its dark coloration and distinctive blue-edged fins. Also known by names like Dusky Angelfish or Multi-spined Angelfish, it is a popular choice in the aquarium hobby for its resilience and engaging personality.

Physical Characteristics

  • Coloration: The fish typically has a deep brown to black body, often with faint darker vertical bars or horizontal stripes along the flanks. The most notable feature is the thin, brilliant blue outline on its dorsal, caudal (tail), and anal fins.
  • Size: Bluefin Angelfish are a dwarf species and usually reach a maximum size of 4.5 to 6 inches (11-15 cm).
  • Sexual Dimorphism: There are no readily distinguishable differences in color or appearance between males and females. This species is a protogynous hermaphrodite, meaning individuals can change sex from female to male to ensure breeding success in a social group.

Habitat and Behavior

  • Natural Habitat: In the wild, they are common in the Indian Ocean and parts of the Western Pacific, living in coral-rich lagoons, channels, and outer reef slopes at depths of 3 to 20 meters (10 to 65 feet).
  • Temperament: They are generally semi-aggressive, particularly towards other angelfish, and are best kept singly in an aquarium setting unless the tank is very large. They appreciate ample live rock with many hiding places and crevices for foraging and shelter.
  • Reef Compatibility: While they can be kept in some reef aquariums with caution, they are prone to nipping at sessile invertebrates such as stony corals, soft corals, and clam mantles.

Diet and Care

  • Diet: Bluefin Angelfish are omnivores. In the wild, their diet consists of algae, detritus, and small invertebrates. In captivity, a varied diet is crucial, including high-quality marine algae (like Spirulina and Nori), mysis or brine shrimp, and angelfish preparations containing sponge matter.
  • Aquarium Care:
    • Minimum Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 55 to 70 gallons is recommended to provide sufficient swimming room and territory.
    • Water Parameters: They thrive in standard saltwater parameters: temperature between 72-82°F (22-28°C), pH 8.0-8.4, and specific gravity 1.020-1.027.
    • Hardiness: They are known for their resilience and adaptability, making them suitable for aquarists of intermediate skill levels.
