Overview

The female Hooded Flame Wrasse (Cirrhilabrus bathyphilus) is a popular, peaceful, and reef-safe marine aquarium fish known for its pink to red coloration. This species exhibits sexual dimorphism, with females having more subdued hues compared to the male’s vibrant colors.

Characteristics and Care

The female Hooded Flame Wrasse is a hardy, active fish suitable for beginner hobbyists.
  • Size: They reach a maximum size of about 4 inches.
  • Coloration: Females are generally an overall red to pink color.
  • Tank Requirements: A minimum aquarium size of 50-70 gallons with plenty of rockwork, crevices, and a tight-fitting lid (as they are known to jump) is recommended.
  • Temperament: They are peaceful and reef-safe, not bothering corals or invertebrates. Multiple females can be kept together, or a single male can be kept with a group of females if introduced simultaneously.
  • Diet: They are carnivores and should be fed a varied diet of enriched frozen meaty foods (like mysis and brine shrimp) and marine pellets multiple times a day.
  • Reproduction: Wrasses are protogynous hermaphrodites, meaning they are all born female and the dominant female may turn into a male later in life.
