Overview

Characteristics and Behavior

• Coloration: The fish has an entirely yellow body with a reddish-orange streak through its eye and outlining on the dorsal and anal fins.
• Size: Adults typically reach a maximum size of around 2.5 to 3 inches (6-8 cm).
• Unique Behavior: A fascinating trait of the yellow assessor is its tendency to swim vertically or upside down under ledges and in dimly lit areas, an adaptation that helps it navigate its natural cave and overhang habitats.
• Temperament: Generally peaceful, this species is less aggressive than most dottybacks. However, it can be territorial with other fish of the same species or similar shape unless housed in a large aquarium with plenty of hiding spots. It is entirely reef-safe and will not harm corals or most invertebrates. 

Aquarium Care

• Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of a 30-gallon (113-liter) aquarium is recommended for a single fish.
• Habitat: The tank should have plenty of live rock formations, caves, and crevices to mimic its natural environment and provide secure hiding spots. A tight-fitting lid is essential as they are known to jump when startled.
• Diet: The yellow assessor is a carnivore that primarily feeds on small, meaty foods. In captivity, it thrives on a varied diet of vitamin-enriched frozen or live foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped squid, and plankton. It will also accept high-quality marine flakes and pellets.
• Water Conditions: They are hardy and adaptable but require stable water parameters:
  • Temperature: 72-78°F (22-26°C)
  • pH: 8.1-8.4
  • Salinity: 1.020-1.025 specific gravity
