Description
Overview
The Black Leopard Wrasse (Macropharyngodon negrosensis or Macropharyngodon meleagris) is a beautiful but delicate marine fish native to the Indo-Pacific coral reefs, known for its distinctive spotted pattern and a tendency to burrow in the sand. This species is recommended for expert aquarists only due to its specific care and dietary requirements.Â
Key Characteristics
- Appearance: The fish exhibits sexual dimorphism.
- Females generally have a black body with many pale, light blue, or yellowish spots.
- Males are generally orange-red with green mottling edged in blue and black, or overall black with a purple throat, thick lines on the face, and scales edged in light green, depending on the exact species variant.
- Size: They typically grow to a maximum length of 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 cm).
- Temperament: It is a peaceful and timid fish, although males may fight with other males of the same genus unless in a very large system.
- Behavior: They are very active during the day, constantly foraging for food near the substrate. At night or when threatened, they bury themselves in the sand. They are known for their unusual, bobbing swimming style, which may confuse predators.Â
Aquarium Care and Requirements
Due to their sensitive nature, Black Leopard Wrasses require specific conditions to thrive in captivity:Â
- Established Tank: They need a very established and mature aquarium (minimum 50-75 gallons) with abundant live rock and a deep, fine sand bed (at least 3 inches) to provide natural food sources and burrowing space.
- Diet: They are carnivores and primarily feed on small invertebrates, such as foraminiferans, copepods, and amphipods, found in live rock and sand. They can be difficult to transition to prepared frozen foods, and a healthy population of live micro-invertebrates (potentially from a connected refugium) is crucial for their survival.
- Environment: A tight-fitting lid is essential as they are known to jump when startled. They prefer stable water conditions with a temperature range of 72-78° F (22-26°C), pH of 8.1-8.4, and specific gravity of 1.020-1.025.
- Tank Mates: They should be housed with other peaceful species that will not outcompete them for food or harass their timid nature.Â
The Black Leopard Wrasse is a stunning and rewarding fish for a dedicated and experienced hobbyist who can meet its specialized needs.Â
