Overview

The Blue Flasher Wrasse (Paracheilinus cyaneus) is a vibrant and peaceful marine fish known for the male’s dazzling courtship displays. This species is a popular choice for saltwater aquariums due to its striking coloration and active behavior.

Key Characteristics

  • Scientific Name: Paracheilinus cyaneus
  • Max Size: Typically grows to about 3–4 inches (7.6–10 cm)
  • Lifespan: Can live for 5–7 years with proper care in an aquarium setting
  • Habitat: Found in the Western Central Indo-Pacific, on shallow reef crests and sheltered reefs with mixed coral and rubble at depths of 20 to 114 feet (6 to 35 meters)
  • Diet: A carnivore/planktivore, feeding primarily on zooplankton in the wild
  • Temperament: Generally peaceful and active, making it an excellent addition to most community reef tanks
  • Reef Safe: Yes, it is considered reef safe and will not harm corals or most invertebrates

Appearance and Sexual Dimorphism

The Blue Flasher Wrasse exhibits distinct sexual dimorphism, meaning males and females have different appearances.
  • Females/Juveniles: Usually more subdued in coloration, appearing a more uniform red to orange hue with a subtle elegance.
  • Males: Develop much brighter and more diverse colors. During courtship (“flashing”), the male displays spectacular metallic blue coloration along its back and body, with red and yellow accents. They also feature elongated filaments on their dorsal and tail fins, which are splayed during displays to attract females.

Aquarium Care

The Blue Flasher Wrasse is a relatively hardy species suitable for intermediate aquarists.
  • Tank Requirements: A minimum aquarium size of 30-50 gallons is recommended. The tank should be aquascaped with ample live rock to provide plenty of hiding spots and crevices, along with open water for swimming.
  • Water Conditions: Optimal conditions include a temperature range of 72–78°F, pH 8.1-8.4, and specific gravity of 1.020-1.025.
  • Feeding: This fish should be fed a diet rich in small, meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood two or three times a day.
  • Compatibility: They are best kept in small groups, preferably with one male and several females, to encourage natural behavior and flashing displays. They are peaceful toward most other fish, but a tight-fitting lid is essential as they are known to jump when startled.

Approximate Purchase Size: Small: 1/2″ to 1-1/2″; Medium: 1-1/2″ to 2-1/4″; Large: 2-1/4″ to 3″
