Description
Overview
The male Eightline Flasher Wrasse is distinguished by its vibrant orange-red body with eight striking blue horizontal stripes, and noticeably larger, more elaborate dorsal and anal fins compared to the female.Â
Physical Characteristics
- Coloration:Â The body is primarily red, orange, and yellow, with eight distinct electric blue or purple lines running horizontally along its length. This coloration becomes significantly more intense during courtship displays or when the fish is excited.
- Fins:Â Males have impressive, elongated dorsal and anal fins that they flare out during their “flashing” behavior to attract females and ward off rivals. Some males may also have a long, slender spine as part of their dorsal fin.
- Size:Â Males are generally larger than females and can reach an adult size of up to 4 inches (10 cm).
- Other Features:Â They have a pointy head and mouth that helps them scavenge in the rockwork.Â
Behavior and Sexual Dimorphism
The most notable characteristic is the “flashing” display, a rapid burst of color and fin flaring, which is a key part of the male’s courtship ritual. Females, in contrast, have more subdued coloration and shorter, less dramatic fins.Â
Like many wrasses, they are protogynous hermaphrodites, meaning all juveniles are female, and the largest, most dominant female in a group will eventually transition into a male if the existing male is removed or dies.Â
