Description

Overview

The female Golden Rhomboidalis Wrasse has a predominantly golden-yellow body with purple patterns, which are typically more subdued than those of the male. Her tail is less distinctly diamond-shaped compared to the male’s, and she generally remains smaller in size.

Key Characteristics

  • Coloration: Females are mostly golden yellow with some purple or blue accents and intricate line patterns, but these colors are less vibrant and less defined than the male’s.
  • Fins: A key differentiator is the pelvic fins; females have shorter, stubbier pelvic fins, whereas males have noticeably longer, more elongated ones.
  • Size: Females typically do not grow as large as males.
  • Tail Shape: The female’s tail is less pronouncedly a “diamond” (rhomboid) shape compared to the male’s.
  • Sexual Dimorphism: The species exhibits sexual dimorphism, with males becoming more colorful, especially during courtship displays.
  • Hermaphroditism: Like other fairy wrasses, all Golden Rhomboidalis Wrasses are protogynous hermaphrodites, meaning they start as females and the dominant individual in a group can transition into a male if needed.
