Overview

The female Johnson’s fairy wrasse (Cirrhilabrus johnsoni) is characterized by subdued coloration, typically appearing pink to peach with brightly colored yellow lines running along its body. Her fins are generally transparent.

Key characteristics of the female Johnson’s fairy wrasse include:

  • Coloration: The body is a subtle pink or peach hue.
  • Markings: Bright yellow lines are present along her sides.
  • Fins: Her fins are less colorful, often transparent, compared to the male’s vibrant fins.
  • Size: Females are generally smaller than males, with the species reaching a maximum length of about 3 inches (7.6 cm).
  • Appearance in the Wild/Aquarium: When observed in their natural habitat at moderate depths or in an aquarium setting, females have less pronounced overall coloration than males.
Male Johnson’s fairy wrasses, by contrast, develop richer and more vibrant colors, including orange and yellow body coloration, pink accents, and bright red fins highlighted in blue. Like all fairy wrasses, females are protogynous hermaphrodites, meaning they can change sex and color to become males under certain social or environmental conditions.
