• Coloration: Dominant males are significantly more colorful than females or subdominant males, displaying a stunning array of blues, reds, yellows, and purples. The body is typically lavender-pink to purple, often suffused with yellow or white on the belly. Bold purple stripes run along the back and, in dominant males, the belly. The fins are large and ornate, colored in orange to yellow with distinct blue markings and speckles.
• Size: Males are generally larger than females, reaching a maximum length of up to 5 inches (12 cm).
• Sexual Dimorphism: The species is a protogynous hermaphrodite, meaning individuals start as females and the dominant individual in a group can transition into a male. Females and subdominant males have a more subdued coloration, primarily blue horizontal lines and dots covering the head and body, lacking the vivid hues and ornate fins of a dominant male.
• Behavior: The male Lineatus Fairy Wrasse is a peaceful, active fish that will often display its brilliant colors during courtship or to assert dominance. They are known to be jumpers, so a tight-fitting aquarium lid is essential for captive environments.
• Habitat: This species originates from the waters of the Great Barrier Reef and the Coral Sea, inhabiting clear outer reef slopes.
