The Tiger Snapping Shrimp has a tan body with rust colored broken stripes running across the back. These beneficial shrimp will constantly move gravel making them excellent sand stirrers in the reef aquarium, as well as scavenging any uneaten food. The sound it makes comes from an appendage on the pincher which moves when the pincher is opened or closed, and water is ejected. It is considered a Symbiotic Shrimp, which means it forms an equally beneficial relationship with Gobies. This shrimp shares its food with the Goby, and the Goby warns the shrimp of predators due to the fact is has better eyesight than the shrimp.
It is intolerant of copper or high nitrate levels and needs the correct level of iodine in the water to promote proper molting. The Tiger Snapping Shrimp will accept any meaty freeze-dried and frozen foods and bottom feeder tablets. This carnivore will grow to a length of three inches.
The Diamond Watchman Goby has a white head and body on which a display of orange spots appear. It is a timid fish that makes a great addition to the reef tank because of its longevity. It is best housed in a 30 gallon or larger aquarium with live sand as the substrate, and an attached populated refugium. It uses shallow burrows in the substrate as refuge and feeds off the bottom as it sifts through the sand. Its diet should include a variety of live and frozen brine shrimp, Mysis shrimp, live black worms, and prepared foods for carnivores and should be fed frequently. It can grow to a length of six inches.
