Overview
The Magma Fairy Wrasse is a “newer” species of fairy wrasse scientifically described as recently as 2017. This vibrantly-colored species of Cirrhilabrus wrasse was named after Barnett Shutman who provided photographs as well as type specimens for scientific identification. Thus, this beautiful red/orange wrasse received the scientific name Cirrhilabrus shutmani in honor of Shutman. With its fiery magma-red coloration, it is easy to see why Cirrhilabrus shutmani received its common name, Magma Fairy Wrasse. Its common name also alludes to the volcanic reefs from which the Magma Fairy Wrasse originates. The Magma Fairy Wrasse was first found living around the volcanic reef rubble slopes of Northern Philippines at a depth of 150 ft to 200 ft.
The Magma Fairy Wrasse is very similar in shape, behavior and temperament to that of other Cirrhilabrus species making it a great candidate for the reef aquarium or fish only aquarium 55 gallons or larger in size. The Magma Fairy Wrasse does best when housed in a well-filtered established aquarium aquascaped with a generous amount of live rock carefully aquascaped to provide ample shelter as well as large open spaces to swim. The Magma Fairy Wrasse will tend not bother corals or invertebrates but can be somewhat opportunistic so use caution when housing it with smaller ornamental inverts. A single male can be kept with a group of females that are introduced prior to or at the same time as the male. A tight-fitting canopy is also recommended.

The Magma Fairy Wrasse diet should include vitamin enriched frozen mysis shrimp, vitamin enriched frozen brine shrimp, and other meaty foods along with a high quality marine flake and marine pellet food.
